February 24th, 2023
In Law No. 18/2008 regarding Rubbish Management, the prohibition of carrying out open burning waste is stated. The ban is based on the negative impact on health and the environment. Even though it has been said in the law, open burning of waste still occurs. One of them happened in the Greater Jakarta area, which is a metropolitan area with a population of 19,562,281 people (7.17% of the total population in Indonesia), with waste generation reaching 5,603,288.25 tonnes/year (19.46% of waste generation in Indonesia). Departing from these problems, PT Wasteforchange Alam Indonesia (Waste4Change) in collaboration with Yayasan Bicara Udara Anak Bangsa (Bicara Udara) conducted a study on open burning waste activities that occurred in the Jabodetabek area.
