Prevent Plastic From Ending Up in the Ocean and the Environment

Flexible plastic, such as plastic bags, rubbish bags, and other similar types, is one of the most common types of plastic waste produced in Indonesia and often pollutes the ocean.

Through the Laut Yang Tenang Program, Waste4Change with rePurpose Global continues working to prevent flexible plastic waste from ending up in the ocean. It is done by collecting, processing, and ensuring that flexible plastic waste is recycled responsibly.

Ensure that waste collection and management operations heed environmental and social aspects following applicable regulations

Increasing waste management capacity and productivity by supporting the installation of machines and utilities to Waste4Change and WSP facilities

Ensure legality and operational administrative requirements following applicable regional and national regulations

Implement the work contracts for informal sector workers in the Waste4Change Supplier Partnership (WSP) to ensure there are no forced/underage workers

Occupational Health and Safety (K3)

Implement SOPs related to Occupational Health and Safety (K3) and natural disasters to maintain worker comfort

Provide PPE and uniform work safety standards to ensure worker safety

Provide periodic training and adits to continue to prepare workers' preparedness

Socio-Economic Status

Ensure legality and operational administrative requirements following applicable regional and national regulations

Providing a forum for accommodating worker complaints.

What is the Laut Yang Tenang Project?

Laut Yang Tenang is an effort to collect flexible waste, such as plastic bags (asoy), to reduce the generation of waste in the environment and sea to realize the vision of an ocean without waste.

In implementing the Laut Yang Tenang project, Waste4Change and rePurpose Global were involved.
What is the aim of this program?

Laut Yang Tenang Project aims to reduce the generation of waste in the environment, including the sea, to realize the vision of an ocean without waste.
Where is this program held?

Until June 2023, Laut Yang Tenang has collected more than 1,200 tons of flexible waste from 3 operational areas: Jabodetabek, West Java, and Bali.
If a waste bank is interested in joining the project and WSP, what do they do?

Waste4Change will first prompt the initiation with potential partners to measure capabilities and suitability of criteria. If the conditions and documents meet the requirements, we will proceed to signing the contract with a collaboration duration of 1 year.
How can rePurpose Global and Waste4Change ensure that the Laut Yang Tenang Project runs consistently for the next 20 years?

Currently, Waste4Change and rePurpose Global are committed to continuing the Laut Yang Tenang project for at least the next 3 years. To ensure the sustainability and support of this project, it is Waste4Change's priority to obtain verification from VERRA by working with rePurpose Global and all parties involved to get more attention. Waste4Change and rePurpose Global are committed to ensuring project sustainability, waste recycling, economic sustainability, and the informal sector involved to remain alive.

After validation and verification of Verra is achieved, we hope more partners will collaborate on the project.
What types of plastic are collected in this project?

Asoy plastic is a priority because it is the type of plastic most often encountered daily. The recycling partner will recycle this plastic into plastic pellets.
Are there any limitations on the range of partners who want to join WSP?

Currently, the focus area of the Waste4Change Supplier Partnership is the Jabodetabek, West Java, Bali, and East Java areas (under development). However, we will continue to strive to expand our capabilities and reach to other sites.
