The growth of economic activity in Morowali Regency, driven by the mining sector, has contributed to an increase in waste generation, while the existing waste management system remained insufficiently structured and optimized. Waste management capacity was still limited, operations were not yet well organized, and community participation in waste segregation remained relatively low. Meanwhile, support through capacity building, the application of appropriate technologies, and collaboration with government and industry stakeholders still needed to be strengthened.

Through the Waste Management Community Based TPS 3R empowerment program, capacity building and intensive assistance were provided to establish a more systematic and sustainable waste management system. TPS 3R Onepute Jaya increased its waste management capacity to an average of 0.8 tons per day, with a total of 265.8 tons of waste managed from 267 customers across more than one village. Organic waste was also processed into economically valuable compost, with 9.9 tons sold. These improvements were supported by the implementation of appropriate technologies, community education and awareness activities, as well as advocacy with local government that resulted in more targeted budget support. Partnerships with government and industry stakeholders continue to be strengthened to support sustainable waste management and the development of a circular economy.

Waste4Change provided support that contributed to the smooth implementation of the program, with timely reporting and increasingly consistent data management. Positive progress in key CPR indicators reflects the contribution of the assistance to the program’s achievements. Strong collaboration with the district-level government and other stakeholders has also played an important role in supporting the successful implementation of the program.

Waste4Change’s assistance has given us new knowledge and experience in managing waste in a more structured and sustainable manner. We gained insights into regulations, planning, administration, operations, and the managerial aspects of TPS 3R management. The assistance has helped us become more independent in operating and developing the TPS 3R, enabling us to extend its benefits to a wider community.

Waste management continued to face challenges due to low levels of waste segregation at source, contributing to an increasing burden on final disposal facilities. Community participation remained limited, while waste bank management needed to be strengthened in terms of operations, institutional capacity, and the utilization of the economic potential of recyclable waste. Collaboration among stakeholders and the use of local regulations also needed to be further optimized to support a sustainable waste management system.

Through a collaboration between Yayasan WINGS Peduli and Waste4Change in 2024–2025, the #PilahDariSekarang program strengthened four waste banks through the 5 Aspects of Waste Management approach, training, and awareness campaigns. The program strengthened institutional and operational capacity while encouraging greater community participation, with more than 500 people educated and actively involved in waste segregation and collection. The program successfully managed 6.4 tons of waste, generating an economic benefit of IDR 15.6 million. Positive changes were also reflected in improved waste segregation accuracy, greater consistency in waste collection, and stronger communication between waste bank managers and members, supporting a community-based waste management system rooted in the circular economy.

Together with Waste4Change, we developed Waste Banks as part of the #PilahDariSekarang campaign to encourage the habit of segregating waste at source. Waste4Change has been a strategic partner throughout the process, from community assessments to hands-on field assistance. The support provided has not only strengthened the community’s understanding of proper waste management, but has also helped Waste Banks build their capacity to educate the community and implement more organized, transparent, and sustainable operational and financial management systems.

Through Waste4Change’s assistance, we gained a deeper understanding of Waste Bank management, from administration and waste segregation to community education. The assistance opened our eyes to the potential of Waste Banks to grow and provide broader benefits to the community. We are now more confident in developing our Waste Bank activities, expanding community participation, and creating business opportunities by selecting the right recyclers and waste management partners.

School

Waste management at schools such as SMKN 18 Jakarta and SMPN 7 Kota Bekasi continued to face challenges, particularly in waste segregation at source. Student awareness and participation needed to be strengthened through participatory and practical educational approaches that could encourage behavioral change. Waste management practices had also not yet been fully integrated into school activities on a sustainable basis.

Through the School Campaign Program, students gained knowledge and hands-on experience through a plastic waste collection competition, the establishment of a Green Team, educational visits, and workshops on organic and inorganic waste management. The program established 61 Green Team members as agents of change and involved 458 students, who collectively collected 57.76 kg of plastic waste. These activities contributed to increased student awareness of waste segregation and responsible waste management at source, while fostering a greater sense of shared responsibility for maintaining a clean and environmentally sustainable school environment.
