The Rise of Green Jobs and Its Global Impact

After getting to know what Green Jobs are and how it impacts various sectors globally, do you know that the existence of Green Jobs has expanded and grown exponentially around the world?

Reflecting on climate change that continues to emerge globally, Green Jobs are predicted to be increasing over the few decades.

The Reasons Behind the Rise of Green Job

The demand for environmentally-friendly energy and technology remains increasing. This is in line with the growing efforts of many countries to slowly shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. This is also a way to fulfill the emission standards set out in the Paris Agreement in order to reduce the impact of global warming.

As stated in the Paris Agreement, 195 countries have agreed to reduce carbon emissions to prevent climate change. All the countries present in the agreement event are committed to keep the earth’s average temperature rise below 2 degrees Celsius.

Green Jobs and Future Employment Availability

According to The International Labor Organization (ILO), a shift to a greener economy could potentially create 24 million new jobs globally by 2030.

As stated in the World Employment and Social Outlook, the ILO expressed that new green jobs are strongly dependent to the implementation of sustainable practices in the energy sector. The use of electric-based vehicles and improvement in energy efficiency are big factors for our future development.

Also, ILO said that the current global market for environmentally-friendly goods and services could reach US $1,370 billion per year. It’s also predicted that there will be 1.2 billion jobs dependent on a stable and healthy environment. The industries involved are agriculture, fisheries, forestry, pharmaceuticals, to tourism.

How Green Jobs Rise Globally?

We are currently at a phase where the whole world is simultaneously making a transition towards a massive utilization of green energy.

According to research by a pair of economists from the UK, the growth of Green Jobs in the United States, which has an impact on the Green Economy, employs 10 times more people than the fossil fuel industry with a total of 9.5 million jobs. Also, according to the United States Energy Information Administration, renewable energy contributes to 15% of the total existing electricity generator.

As reported by bigthink.com, the investment in renewable energy is currently developing, even in oil-producing countries. Texas is one example of a country that involves renewable energy sources such as wind and solar in its energy production.

On a mission to be emission-free, Kenya is starting one of its paths by creating the largest wind power plant in Africa. Not only Africa, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has also made breakthroughs in the use of renewable energy through the construction of one of the largest solar power plants in the world.

Good thing, researchers predict that the world will be 100% ready for the presence of renewable energy by 2050.

The Impact on the Fossil Fuel Industry

From 2015 to 2016, the fossil fuels industry, which includes coal, oil, and natural gas, has employed approximately 900,000 people in the United States.

However, along with the development of Green Jobs around the world, researchers from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis in The Guardian 2018, said that the fossil fuel industry was faltering and was becoming the weakest in decades.

ILO’s World Employment and Social Outlook also estimates that 6 million jobs will be lost along with the increase in Green Jobs and the economy moving towards a greener direction. These jobs involve the areas of petroleum extraction and refinery, coal mining, and the production of electricity from coal.

Waste4Change is also working to fully support the implementation of Green Jobs through Responsible Waste Management (RWM) services. One of our missions is to ensure the welfare and health of our waste operators by conducting health protocols and making sure that our operators are using personal protective equipment (PPE) during work hours. The Responsible Waste Management (RWM) service can be your solution to manage your waste wisely. Let’s reduce the amount of waste that has to end up in the landfill! Find out more at w4c.id/RWM.
