In August 8th, 2018, PRAISE (Packaging and Recycling Association for Indonesia Sustainable Environment), Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (KLKH RI), DKI Jakarta Environmental Service and Waste4Change held a press conference announcing the launch of PRAISE Dropping Box Program for the purpose of increasing the awareness and participation of waste sorting in Jakarta.

PRAISE is an independent association fronted by six founding companies (Coca-Cola, Danone, Indofood, Nestlé, Tetra Pak, and Unilever Indonesia) that has actively started, supported, facilitated and invested in various programs and initiatives towards holistic packaging waste management in Indonesia, especially by minimizing the impact of packaging waste.

PRAISE is present as a form of concern, commitment and responsibility of the six companies to help provide sustainable solutions and education on waste management issues in Indonesia.

One of PRAISE‘s commitments is manifested in a program to develop collaborative models of waste management systems, also known as ESR (Extended Stakeholders Responsibility).

PRAISE hopes that this program can accelerate the ecosystem function of waste recycling and waste reuse according to the principles of Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy.

The launch of Dropping Box program with 100 units will be the first step of PRAISE‘s ESR. The dropping boxes will be placed in various areas of Jakarta, such as shops, public facilities, offices, and educational institutions. All of these places have good visibility so that the goal of educating the community about the importance of sorting waste will be achieved.

This initiative becomes a solution cycle that embraces every stakeholder involved, namely: consumers as the most important element, government (KLHK RI & DLH DKI Jakarta), industry (PRAISE), Waste Management with Waste Bank (Bank Sampah) and Waste4Change.

Dr. Novrizal Tahar, Director of Waste Management, Directorate General of Waste, Waste and Hazardous Toxic Materials Management (PSLB3) Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (KLKH RI) emphasized the government involvement in handling the waste problems.

He informed that the government has established national waste management policies and strategies known as JAKSTRANAS – based on Presidential Regulation No.97 of 2017 concerning National Waste Management Policies and Strategies for Households Waste and Waste Similar to Household Waste.

Through the JAKSTRANAS policy, the government is targeting to reduce waste by 30% and be able to process the waste by 70% in 2025.

Dr. Novrizal Tahar also expressed that the government welcomes the support of all parties, including producers such as PRAISE and most importantly the direct participation of the community.

The government also considered this as a collective effort to encourage the growth of a comprehensive circular economy in Indonesia. Improving waste collecting systems with public behavioral change is one of the most important links in the growth of the circular economy.

The Deputy Head of the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service Ali Maulana Hakim, S.Ip, MSi on behalf Drs. H Isnawa Adji, MAP; commented on the PRAISE Dropping Box initiative that is in line with DKI Jakarta Environmental Service effort on educating Indonesians about how waste sorting can ensure the economic value of recyclable waste.

Together with PRAISE, the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service wants to change the hierarchy of waste management to no longer be centralized in the downstream level, but starting in the upstream level by separating and sorting the consumed waste, and making it a joint movement.

The PRAISE representative, Sinta Kaniawati, added that in order to tackle the alarming waste problem, it’s important to change people’s perceptions and habits towards waste. Indonesians need to understand that proper sorted waste equals to highly valuable waste.

Unfortunately, the awareness of the importance of waste sorting in Indonesia households is still very low – only 18,84%, according to the data from the Central Bureau of Statistics in 2014.

In order to solve this problem together, PRAISE believes that community active participation in sorting out the waste must continue to be encouraged.

”The Dropping Box initiative has received full support from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia and the Environmental Service of DKI Jakarta. We believe this solution can create a holistic packaging waste management system that focuses on sorting, transporting and managing waste by involving all elements of society towards the sustainable recovery of packaging product waste, ” Sinta concluded.
