Indonesia is still struggling with waste management. There are people who still don’t know the right waste segregating method and how to manage it.
The increase of population and people’s consumption patterns have been the main factors as to why waste is increasing. In the end, all of that mixed waste will end up in the landfill.
Ignorance and passivity toward waste have become two of the reasons why waste is piling up until it reaches 34 million tons in 2020, as stated from Sistem Informasi Pengelolaan Sampah Nasional (SIPSN). Therefore, waste management education could be the little step that we can take to reduce the amount of waste. Starting by segregating the waste to know the benefit of recycling trash and how to manage it properly.
Not just individually, the industrial sector and producer can also help in preventing the waste from piling up. One of the solutions is by designing the flow of waste management from each of their products. Hence, a waste management consultant is needed in their business. With the help of a waste management consultant, companies can sustainably integrate their waste management system with the local waste management regulations.
The education on responsible waste management methods can have a huge impact on the whole society. Proper waste management can also reduce the number of waste that is piling up in the landfill. Assistant Deputy for Solid Waste and Liquid Waste Management from the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Rofi Alhanif explained that waste problems in Indonesia are massive and cannot be optimized yet. He stated that there’s at least 2 tons of waste that are managed with 4,2 tons left unmanaged.
The waste management consultants can help producers, industries, and society to be more aware of the danger of irresponsible waste management and abandoned waste. Society will also know the right way to manage the waste to help reduce the number of waste that ends up at the landfill. One of the ways is by recycling inorganic waste, or the easiest way is to find out about a community or company that will help them properly manage all of their waste. That simple and easy way can really help in reducing the waste that ends up in landfill.
