The competition, supported by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov DKI Jakarta), Waste4Change, GBCI, and MVB Indonesia, plans to involve 100 restaurant/cafe entrepreneurs, as well as 100 building / hotel / public area managers in Jakarta to join in the effort of spreading the awareness of a minimal waste production in business management.
The issue of waste has become one of the main challenges of Jakarta. The amount of garbage in the capital continues to rise every year. Today’s data shows that the total of Jakarta’s garbage is approximately 7,500 tons per day. In 2021, the Bantargebang TPST (the place where all the Jakartans waste ends up) is predicted not to be able to accommodate garbage anymore, because it has exceeded its capacity.

Answering this challenge, and in line with the mandate of the National Strategy Policy (JAKSTRANAS), the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has a common target of reducing the amount of waste by as much as 20%, and handling waste as much as 80% in the Jakarta area. The participation of all parties becomes an urgency to reach these targets.
Based on data from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Sanitation Office (2011), 60,5% DKI Jakarta’s waste sources come from residential areas, and the second rank comes from commercial / business areas, namely 28.7%. At present, there are many solid waste education programs in the community, but there is no specific program that embraces the business / commercial world.

As a first step, the DKI Jakarta Environment Agency, together with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government launched a program called Jakarta Less Waste Initiative that invited owners/management of buildings, offices, malls, and restaurants to become pioneers in Jakarta’s waste reduction efforts. This facilitation program is open to the business community to participate and will last for 6 months, starting from June to November 2019.
“The implementation of the initiative is divided into two categories, namely building and restaurant. With this initiative, the goal is that the business entrepreneurs can implement efforts to reduce and handle responsible waste in Jakarta and can contribute to reducing waste by 10% in its business location, “said Andono Warih, as the Acting Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Environment Agency.
