“Through this BRIC program, I am optimistic that we can clean up the waste from the Bekasi river. This kind of initiation and activity needs to be raised on the national scale. Involvement and collaboration from the local government community is not enough, the participation of the central government is needed to solve this waste problem faster. We invite every element to take part in preserving the Bekasi river from upstream to downstream. This amazing action starts from Bekasi and can be developed to the other regions and its rivers,” said Vice Mayor of Bekasi, Dr. Tri Adhianto Tjahyono.

The three boats from the innovative See Hamster which has officially operated in Bekasi River have different mechanisms from regular boats. The first See Hamster has ramps to pull waste from the river water and the river borders. The second See Hamster is equipped with a basket that can move up and down to hold and collect waste when the boat sails through the river. The third See Hamster has conveyor belts which can pull waste automatically from the water.

All of the See Hamster boats work synergically and complement each other. Every boat uses a solar panel, making it an environment-friendly system with zero carbon emission. The See Hamster boats have a collecting capacity of 50 – 300 kgs of waste per day, with hope to decrease waste generated from the river. The waste management facility is equipped with a sorting place, temporary waste storage, and also a charging station to recharge the boat’s power.

“I am pleased that we have finished the preparation of this unique project together. It’s unique because right now there is no other plastic river cleanup project with a zero carbon emission in the world: boats with electric motors and conveyors, everything is powered by solar panels,” said Dr. Harald Frank, Project Manager BRIC.

Regarding the launch of the three See Hamster boats, Dr. Harald Frank adds, “Only through collaboration and trust, we can launch the BRIC project – despites of the difficulties and delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This BRIC project is truly realized from the bond of friendship between all activity partners and the public.”

Besides working with the Bekasi City Government, this program also in partnership with competent parties, that is: Schwarz Group, One Earth One Ocean (OEOO), Environmental Service of Bekasi, Department of Highways and Water Resources (DBMSDA) of Bekasi, and also Pasukan Katak (a special task force that cleans the Bekasi River).

“I am thankful to the Bekasi City Government, Delta Pekayon Bekasi residents, and One Earth One Ocean for the initiative and the collaboration in launching the See Hamster boats this morning. This launch is a result of our concern with the waste on the Bekasi River. Handling waste is everyone’s responsibility. We hope through this collaboration with the Bekasi City Government, we can open opportunities with the local government in other regions to achieve a more responsible waste management of Indonesia,” closed Mohamad Bijaksana Junerosano, Founder and Managing Director Waste4Change.
