Akademi Bijak Sampah (AKABIS) for The 2018 YSEALI Regional Workshop: Marine Debris Expedition

On August 7th, 2018, Waste4Change became one of the facilitators for YSEALI (Young Southeast Asian Leader Initiative) Marine Debris Expedition Workshop, held by Divers Clean Action. Sixty young leaders from 10 Southeast Asia countries gathered together to learn the reality of Indonesian waste management.

Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) is U.S. government’s signature program formed to strengthen the leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. YSEALI focuses on critical topics identified by youth in the region: civic engagement, sustainable development, education and economic growth.

The Marine Debris Expedition which was held from August 4th, 2018 to August 9th, 2018 in Jakarta, Indonesia is intended for all passionate young leaders who are interested in broadening their knowledge of waste management system, marine litter issues, and how rivers become the key success factor. The expedition also delivered hands-on experiences and help young leaders create real impacts while returning to their home countries and implement things learned during the workshop.

Supported by DKI Jakarta’s Environmental Service (Dinas Lingkungan Hidup DKI Jakarta),  Akademi Bijak Sampah (AKABIS – Waste Management Academy) is one of the main programs of Waste4Change made to ensure the continuing effort of behavioral change in waste management. The sixty participants from YSEALI were given a brief presentation about current waste management condition from Waste4Change representative, followed by a visit to Waste4Change’s Material Recovery Facility (MRF), Waste4Change’s Composting Area, and the infamous Bantar Gebang landfill – located not far from Waste4Change’s head office.

The YSEALI’s sixty young participants were curious to see how waste is sorted, separated, cleaned, and processed in Waste4Change’s MRF. They were also given a close-up introduction with Waste4Change’s Black Soldier Flies (BSF) farm – listened to our team’s presentation on how Black Soldier Flies holds a big part in composting organic waste.

We are really glad to meet such amazing participants in our Akademi Bijak Sampah (AKABIS) program. We would love to meet you all, again!
