4 Companies That Went Plastic Neutral

What is plastic neutral?

Plastic neutral means that for every amount of plastic created, an equal amount of plastic waste is retrieved from the environment to be properly disposed of – either recycled or repurposed (CleanHub). Being plastic neutral is not the same as being “plastic-free” which does not use plastic for daily activities or business operations. This movement is so simple. You, your family and friends, and your business, as well as your company, just need to reduce your plastic footprint by avoiding excessive plastic use, hopefully, will reach the point when you could reduce it to zero.

Why should we go plastic neutral?

1. Helps to fight plastic pollution

By becoming plastic neutral, you can help to fight plastic pollution by preventing plastic from entering the oceans and other habitats. By removing plastic from the environment, you can also enable the emergence of an innovative plastic upcycling industry.

2. Rebalance the global climate of recycling

Going plastic neutral helps to establish a more equitable, responsible, and effective global waste system. Not only that, but plastic neutrality also offers organizations/companies to take responsibility for the real impact of their plastic consumption instead of shifting the burden on to marine ecosystem, society, and future generations.

3. Contribute to a more sustainable future for all

Through the plastic neutral movements, you can rebalance the global plastic climate, giving “lost-case” plastic new life, and building a platform for innovative green technology to redesign our linear economy into a cyclical one. At the same time, becoming plastic neutral can be reshaping the current socio-economic and environmental impact caused by plastic waste.

How can organizations/companies be plastic neutral?

According to Plastic Neutral Label, there are four simple ways to become a plastic neutral:

1. Calculate

Conducting a plastics audit can help identify plastic products in every company and highlight those that are only used once. Each organization/company should try to calculate their plastic by weight used and type of plastic. It is also worth separating your audit into those plastic items which you send to waste and those your end-user customers will dispose of.

2. Reduce

Once you’ve calculated the plastic usage, every company can start to make a plan on how to reduce it. The first step to consider is to transition away from unnecessary single-use plastics used in your business and keep committed.

3. Offset

Take responsibility for the remaining irreducible plastic footprint by supporting additional clean-up and recycling initiatives.

4. Communicate

Transparently communicate the progress, setbacks, and achievements on the path to plastic neutrality.

Companies that went plastic neutral

All kinds of companies produce a massive amount of waste, from their packaging to the food their employees eat in their cafeteria. Not only does plastic packaging, but all their trash has a disproportionate impact on communities, creating toxic environments, and health problems.

Faced with increasing consumer consciousness and dismal predictions for the future and our human impact on the planet, more and more companies are stepping up and announcing initiatives to curb their environmental impact, from reducing carbon emissions to tackling waste.

Some companies start to take a small step to fight plastic pollution by doing plastic neutral.

1. Better Nature

Better Nature is a UK-based producer of tempeh – a traditional Indonesian soy product made from fermented soybeans. In 2020, they become the world’s first plastic neutral meat-alternatives company.

They start to contribute to the removal of the same amount of plastic from the environment as they use in their packaging and shipping. All their contribution will be sent to one of chosen rePurpose Global partners, Waste4Change. By supporting the organization, Better Nature indirectly reduce the amount of plastic that is sent to landfill and instead ensure it is re-used in an environmentally and socially responsible way.

2. Defunkify

Defunkify is a household cleaning products brand that is committed to removing harmful toxic chemicals from our homes. Founded by experts in Green Chemistry, Defunkify formulates laundry detergents, stain removers, and surface cleaners that are the best performing products on the market to get rid of odors, stains, and grime with 100% non-toxic ingredients.

Every Defunkify product is 100% Plastic Neutral Certified with rePurpose. Additionally, all of their packaging are 100% recyclable and made from 100% FSC Certified Paper and 25% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) Material. Moreover, Defunkify is also Climate Neutral Certified. This means they offset all of their emissions from manufacturing to shipping by investing in carbon reduction and removal projects like clean energy and reforestation.

3. Davines Group

Davines Group is a leader in the formulation and manufacturing of high-end skin and hair care products. They have two brands. Davines dedicated to hair care professionals, and [ comfort zone ], the professional skincare line.

In 2022 they announced that every product will be 100% certified plastic neutral by Plastic Bank. They tackle the challenges of packaging, from the beginning to the end of the life cycle. Davines Group strives to design lighter packaging, still guaranteeing its safety and functionality: more lightweight packaging means a minor quantity of material used, thus fewer resources consumed. Besides that, they are helping protect our planet and improve the lives of local collectors in Indonesia, Brazil, and the Philippines, where recycling is challenging.

4. Nature’s Logic

Nature’s Logic is an all-natural pet food brand and has become the first certified plastic neutral brand within the pet food market. Nature’s Logic has also become the first pet food to contain 100 percent natural ingredients, sourcing all of the nutrition from whole foods.

They also become a part of the Pet Sustainability Coalition which accelerates sustainability in the pet industry as well as sponsors initiatives like the Free The Ocean to help remove plastic from the oceans.

Not only these four companies but there are many more companies that already have neutral plastic certificates. Some of them are Neptune Fish Jerky, Farm to Fit, Simple Switch, WooBamboo, Earth Animals, etc. After all, plastic neutral movement is just a small step but can have a significant impact.
